What to pack for African safari Tanzania

It is a rare opportunity to watch the great wild animals of Africa in their natural home. Though, it’s never going to be that easy when you are arranging the trip as the proper choice of outgoing and incoming clothing, equipment, and accessories. This article saves you time and offer a list of what to pack for an African safari in Tanzania.

  1. Clothing

Layering

Tanzania has different climatic regions; temperature declines from cool to hot. Remember, when it comes to dressing code, layering is very key so that you may feel good no matter the temperatures during your safari in East Africa.

A moisture wicking base layer clothing for layering that will keep you dry at all times. A hoodie like a fleece which can also be a down jacket may be put on when it is cold. Another layer such as a waterproof, windproof jacket, for example, will keep both rain and wind off you.

Tops

Shirts especially t-shirts or collared shirts should form part of your safari dress code. Select those from fabrics that can dry up fast, lightweight and those which let the wearer breath easily. You may also pack a casual shirt or any floral dress for ladies.

Bottoms

Suits, casual trousers or jeans, and stretch fit pants like a cotton trouser are perfect for these long one-day trips. You may also pack short for days when the sun is scorching hot and the temperature is high.

Footwear

For the lower extremities, it is most suitable to wear closed toe clothing with good support, especially boots or hiking shoes in case of walking or hiking session. Even a pair of cheap sandals or flops will be useful when walking around on foot.

Hats and Accessories

You also need a wide brim to protect your head from sun exposure. A scarf can be used for protecting and covering the head/neck from the sun, or fashion, incorporating it into your outfit when you’re on the go.

Specifically, hats and sunglasses with UVA/UVB protection, are essential to preventing the sun’s rays from reaching your eyes.

Gear and EquipmentPersonal Grooming Essentials

Toiletries

Pack convenient transport size and smaller toiletries. Toothbrush, toothpaste, deodorant, shampoo, conditioner and soap must be among the items. Include sun protection cream, lip salve with sun protection factor, and any other medicines required.

Laundry

Safari lodges have less facilities and you should pack a laundry bag in which you put your dirty clothes. Washing clothes on the move is not a problem; it can be dealt with during the trip, so there is no need to pack several outfits.

Gear and Equipment

Camera Gear

You need a good-quality camera together with a zoom lens to photograph sighted wild animals. Carry additional memory cards, a spare battery, and maybe a camera bag or case.

Binoculars

With the help of good binoculars, close observation of animals can be done conveniently without disturbing their natural habitats. Take small and portable pair to have at hand when going for the safari.

Travel Documents and Money

Always carry your passport and visa or other required travel documents with you. Take some cash in the local currency, as well as credit cards for emergencies and to pay for lodges.

Travel Bag

Prefer buying a strong and light travel bag or a backpack, so that it is easy to transport and store.

Miscellaneous Items

Travel Accessories

These are useful on long trips as they eliminate the need for a comfortable headrest and avoid eye irritation. There is also always room for a thin travel blanket especially when you are travelling in a cold or a bumpy car or plane.

Entertainment

Pack a few papers, books, magazines, music or whatever may be of importance if you have free time. Tools you might consider if you are moving around the island include carrying portable chargers or power banks in case your devices batteries run dry.

First Aid Kit

We recommend that you have a basic first aid box, consisting of things like a bandage, painkillers, and insect repellents. Carry medications you may need to use personally in that trip.

As with any travel, packing can be a little overwhelming, but if one follows this guide thoroughly, they will have a good pack list for a Tanzanian safari. Remember that most of the time, clothing should be selected to be appropriate for the climate, traveling, and activities, and add on the accessories of binoculars and cameras. If well planned, your African safari holiday in Tanzania will be one that you will always cherish in your lifetime.
