Ten days built for families: rhino conservancies, a chimpanzee sanctuary, the Maasai Mara, the Serengeti and Ngorongoro Crater, at a pace that works for every age.
Built with families in mind, this ten-day route balances big, memorable wildlife moments with a pace that actually works when you’re travelling with kids: shorter drives some days, hands-on wildlife encounters, and lodges chosen for comfort as much as location.
You’ll start at Ol Pejeta Conservancy, one of East Africa’s most important conservation areas and home to both black rhino and the world’s last two northern white rhinos. Guided game drives here are paired with a visit to the conservancy’s chimpanzee sanctuary, a genuine highlight for children and adults alike.
From there, a quieter day at Lake Naivasha brings a boat cruise past hippos and a chance to spot some of the more than 400 bird species recorded around the lake, before the safari moves into its wildlife heart: two days in the world-famous Maasai Mara, with real chances at the Big Five and, in season, the Great Migration, alongside a visit to a Maasai village to learn about local traditions.
Crossing into Tanzania, you’ll spend two days in the endless plains of Serengeti National Park, with the option to add a dawn hot air balloon flight and champagne breakfast for an unforgettable family splurge, before finishing at the Ngorongoro Crater, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the most concentrated wildlife sanctuaries on the continent.
Like every safari we build, this route is a starting point. Tell us your family’s ages, interests and pace, and we’ll shape the details around you, including an easy extension to Zanzibar if you’d like to close the trip on a beach.
The parts of this route past families mention most, unprompted.
Meet one of Africa's most important conservation success stories up close, including the world's last two northern white rhinos, under the protection of Ol Pejeta's dedicated security teams.
Watch chimpanzees at Ol Pejeta's sanctuary swing, play and interact, a genuinely engaging stop for younger travellers and a rare chance to see chimps in East Africa at all.
Trade the truck for a boat, drifting past hippos and hundreds of resident and migratory bird species in one of Kenya's most peaceful settings.
Real time to explore, spot the Big Five, and if your dates align, witness the Great Migration, plus a visit to a Maasai village to bring the local culture to life for the whole family.
Two days across the Serengeti's different regions, with the option to add a dawn hot air balloon flight and a champagne breakfast in the bush.
Close the safari in one of the most wildlife-dense places on Earth, a UNESCO World Heritage Site that feels like its own self-contained world.
A starting shape: pace, order and length of each stage are all adjustable.
Your guide meets you at the airport and transfers you to your Nairobi hotel. An optional city tour taking in a few of Nairobi's iconic landmarks is a good way to stretch your legs after the flight and start the trip with some easy family bonding time.
A three to four hour drive brings you to Ol Pejeta Conservancy, home to both black rhino and the world's last two northern white rhinos. After checking in and a rest, an afternoon game drive introduces the conservancy's wildlife, including the Big Five alongside giraffe, hippo, eland, hyena, cheetah and African wild dog.
A visit to Ol Pejeta's chimpanzee sanctuary is a highlight for the whole family, watching the resident chimps at play. The rest of the day is spent exploring the conservancy further, with a packed lunch on the go and a full day of game drives until sunset.
Transfer to Lake Naivasha, one of Kenya's freshwater lakes and a gazetted natural heritage site. An optional boat cruise brings you close to hippos and the lake's rich birdlife, a slower, easy day that works well for younger travellers.
Head to the Maasai Mara for lunch, then an afternoon game drive with real chances at the Big Five. Travel between July and October and you may also witness the Great Migration, as millions of wildebeest and hundreds of thousands of zebra move between the Serengeti and the Mara.
Given how large the Mara is, your guide will help plan which sections to prioritise, especially any species you haven't spotted yet. Expect lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo, rhino and more, alongside giraffe, hyena, cheetah and warthog. A visit to a local Maasai village adds a cultural dimension the whole family can take part in.
After breakfast, cross the Isebania to Tarime border into Tanzania, with a picnic lunch en route. Serengeti National Park, Tanzania's oldest national park, offers strong chances at the Big Five plus Masai giraffe, waterbuck, roan antelope, bushbuck and Thomson's gazelle on your afternoon game drive.
The Serengeti splits into the plains, the western corridor and the northern reaches, each with its own character. Families wanting an extra splurge can add a dawn hot air balloon flight with a champagne breakfast in the bush (optional, at extra cost), before a full day game drive with a packed lunch.
Head east from the Serengeti, with lunch en route, before a game drive across the crater floor. Ngorongoro's compact size and rich ecosystem make Big Five sightings a realistic possibility in a single day, a fitting final wildlife stop for the trip.
Transfer to Arusha to conclude your family safari. This is also a natural point to extend the trip with a Zanzibar beach add-on, if your family would like a few days by the ocean before flying home.
Based on past travellers' sightings, here's roughly what to expect on this specific route.
Ol Pejeta Conservancy is one of East Africa's leading examples of conservation funded directly by tourism, and the parks further along this route depend on the same model. We work with guides and camps who take that responsibility seriously.
Fees paid to Ol Pejeta, the Maasai Mara, the Serengeti and Ngorongoro directly fund anti-poaching efforts, habitat protection and, at Ol Pejeta specifically, round-the-clock protection for critically endangered rhino.
Guided visits, including the chimpanzee sanctuary and Maasai village, are built around genuine education and respect rather than staged spectacle, an approach we think matters even more when travelling with children.
We prioritise guides and lodge staff drawn from local communities, so the economic benefit of your family's safari stays close to the land it's built around.
This route is a starting point, not a fixed package. Want to slow the pace down for younger children, add the hot air balloon flight, or extend to Zanzibar? Tell us what matters to your family and we'll build it in.
With the route as a starting point, your specialist will adjust the pace, camps and add-ons until the itinerary feels like yours, not a template.

Yes, the pace and stops on this route were chosen with families in mind, including a genuinely restful day at Lake Naivasha between the more active game-drive days. That said, some lodges and activities have age restrictions (a few conservancies set a minimum age for game drives, typically around 5 to 6 years old), so let us know your children’s ages when you enquire, and we’ll flag anything relevant.
You have strong, realistic chances across Ol Pejeta, the Maasai Mara, the Serengeti and Ngorongoro Crater, all four of which support healthy populations of lion, elephant, buffalo, leopard and rhino. No safari can guarantee every sighting on every day, but this route is built to maximise your odds by covering several of East Africa’s best wildlife areas.
No, it’s an optional add-on at extra cost, along with the Lake Naivasha boat cruise. Both are popular with families and easy to build into your quote; just mention it when you enquire.
Yes, Arusha at the end of this itinerary is an easy jumping-off point for a Zanzibar beach extension. Many families add three to five days there to close the trip. Let us know if you’d like it included in your quote.
Roughly July through October gives you the best odds of catching migration activity in the Maasai Mara, as herds move north from the Serengeti. Outside those months, both parks still offer excellent year-round game viewing, just without the migration itself.
Tell us your dates and we'll confirm whether the timing works, then adjust the route from there.
