8-day Kenya safari tracking one of Africa's rarest sightings
Embark on a breathtaking 7-day safari that immerses you in two of Kenya’s most remarkable landscapes. Your adventure begins in the enchanting Laikipia region, renowned for its private conservancies that provide a sanctuary for some of the most elusive wildlife on the planet. Here, you’ll have the unique opportunity to witness the striking black leopard, celebrated for its rarity. As you traverse this pristine expanse, keep your eyes peeled for the majestic Grevy’s zebra and the elegant reticulated giraffe, both species dwindling in numbers elsewhere in the country.
What sets Laikipia apart is its exclusive access to off-road tracking and exhilarating night game drives, allowing you to delve deeper into the heart of the wilderness in ways that national parks cannot offer. The thrill of spotting wildlife under the starry African sky adds a magical layer to your journey.
The second half of your safari transports you to the iconic Masai Mara, a landscape synonymous with the Great Migration and home to the renowned Big Five. Spend three thrilling nights enveloped by the vast savannah, where the sights and sounds of the wild come alive. While wildlife sightings can never be guaranteed, this carefully crafted itinerary enhances your chances of encountering some of Africa’s rarest cats, alongside the vibrant and diverse wildlife that thrives in the Mara. This journey beautifully intertwines the extraordinary and the classic, creating an unforgettable safari experience in just one week.
The rare and the classic, in one short trip.
One of the highest documented rates of black leopard activity anywhere in the world, never guaranteed, but a genuine chance.
Off-road tracking and night game drives, both unavailable inside Kenya's national parks.
Grevy's zebra and reticulated giraffe, alongside strong populations of lion, elephant and buffalo.
Kenya's most reliable reserve for Big Five viewing, with a chance of migration herds in season.
Small camps chosen for conservation partnerships and low guest numbers, not just location
A starting shape: pace, order and length of each stage are all adjustable.
A short flight north over the Aberdare range into Laikipia's high plateau. Settle in over lunch, then head out on your first afternoon drive across rockier, denser terrain than the Mara's, home to Grevy's zebra and reticulated giraffe. Dinner briefing covers the black leopard's recent movements and the tracking plan ahead.
Two full days of off-road tracking across private conservancy land, working with rangers who monitor the black leopard's territory via fresh tracks and camera-trap data. Expect lion, elephant and buffalo alongside the leopard search. One evening's night game drive reveals aardvark, genet and porcupine — a form of viewing not permitted in most national parks. Optional walking safari and community visit available.
After breakfast we shall head south to Lake Naivasha, arriving for Lunch at your Lake side resort with a great view of a fresh water lake with abundance of birdlife and aquatic wildlife. Afternoon boat ride to cresent Island and you will have a chance to walk among wildlife.
A final Laikipia morning drive before flying south to the Mara — giraffe and topi visible from the airstrip on arrival. Settle into camp for lunch, then head straight into an afternoon drive; lion and elephant sightings are common from the first outing.
Two full days of game drives tracking lion prides, elusive leopard, and, with good fortune, the Mara's resident black rhino. In migration season, expect wildebeest and zebra herds, with river crossings possible nearby. One afternoon includes a Maasai village visit for cultural context. Sundowners overlooking the plains both evenings.
A last game drive rounds out the trip before a short flight back to Nairobi. Depending on your onward connection, use remaining time for last-minute shopping or a relaxed lunch before your international flight.
Based on past travellers' sightings, here's roughly what to expect on this specific route.
Explore the wilderness in pictures
Both legs of this route fund conservation directly — Laikipia through its conservancy model, and the Mara through landowner fee-sharing.
Laikipia's conservancies channel tourism revenue directly into anti-poaching patrols, wildlife research, and community programs
A portion of conservancy fees supports Maasai landowners and helps limit vehicle density in wildlife areas.
Camps on this route employ local staff and follow low-impact practices, from solar power to careful water use.
This route can shift easily — an added night in Laikipia for more tracking time, an extra day in the Mara during migration season, or a beach extension to the Kenyan coast.
